Description: This pharmacy review groups topics into two parts, one on basic science and one on pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical care.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students who intend to take the NAPLEX a comprehensive review of knowledge essential to delivering pharmaceutical care. As the role of pharmacists is changing, so are the competency requirements in pharmaceutical care. Pharmacy school curricula are geared toward addressing this new reality, but it is not always possible for candidates to review all the lecture notes/reading materials from their four years in school. Thus, a comprehensive review such as this becomes handy before taking the NAPLEX.
Audience: This is intended for NAPLEX candidates. The editors also believe that preceptors, pharmacists, and foreign pharmacy graduates will also use this book, and practicing pharmacists may find this a handy reference. Dr. Shargel is known internationally for his scholarly works and most of the authors are well known in their respective fields.
Features: Part one on basic science covers microbiology, immunology, pharmacokinetics, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutics. The part two discussions cover OTC products, disease state management, medication errors, and pharmacoeconomics. This is a comprehensive review that covers almost every topic relevant to NAPLEX. Every chapter ends with study questions and answers with explanations. The appendixes offer a few ready reference materials including budgeting for drug information resources and charts for patient counseling. 
Assessment: This essentially is a resource for candidates preparing for NAPLEX and the depth of the discussions appears to be appropriate for this audience. The book addresses a wide range of topics, which should be helpful to them. Practicing pharmacists also will find it useful.
