Description :
The adult and paediatric examinations for entry to advanced training for the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) are recognised as ranking among the most difficult specialty examinations in the world. Since 1992, Wayne Harris’s Examination Paediatrics has helped candidates prepare for their clinical examination day. It has become important reading for FRACP candidates and those preparing for similar examinations in many parts of the world. The book has even been spotted in the briefcases of College examiners who feel the need to revise their own approach before they examine.
The first edition of Examination Paediatrics was written at a time when most of the information about the examination was handed down to candidates from senior registrars who had recently sat for it. Some were inclined to tell terrifying stories about the ordeal, perhaps in part for their own amusement. This book clarified and demystified the examination by explaining it in detail and outlining ways to conquer it. Over the years the adult and paediatric exams have become fairer but remain rigorous and challenging. There have been changes in the examination format and in paediatrics itself. The fifth edition of this book for examination candidates is right up to date with paediatrics and changes to the testing format.
For many years, we as examiners for the adult FRACP clinical exams have had the opportunity to watch videos of paediatric exam candidates performing short-case examinations at their annual exam calibration sessions. We observe in amazement as the candidate entertains and examines the small patient at the same time, often chasing the child around the room, all of this while being watched by both examiners and parents. It makes the adult short-case examination seem very tame.
Wayne Harris’s book is full of helpful advice to assist candidates in managing this complicated process. As well as the factual knowledge needed to pass the exam, techniques for managing the patient, the parents and the examiners as well as the candidate’s own fears and anxieties are explored in a most comforting way. The new edition contains more detailed sections on cardiology and congenital heart disease—a much-feared exam problem. New long and short cases, including six new neurology cases, are included.
Examination Paediatrics remains essential reading for FRACP candidates and those undertaking similar examinations. Don’t underestimate the importance of reading widely, learning and practicing your own system of examination until it is second nature for every system, and being prepared for surprises. We wish all candidates the very best of luck, and remember as you prepare never give up or give in.
