Each entry provides an overview of the topic, correct pronunciation and definition of medical or scientific terms, and general information (the condition's frequency, symptoms, diagnosis, complications, treatment, and prevention); some articles feature stories of people living with the condition. Sidebars, photos, and well-designed illustrations enhance the text. Volume 4 contains a cumulative bibliography and organization list, glossary, and detailed index that picks up passing references to subjects that do not have their own entries. Changes from the second edition include updated bibliographies, statistics, and resource lists; also, related conditions have been regrouped under broader topics.
